Chapter Nine
The next day, Tiffany had a hell of a shift at the hospital. It seemed as though the patients were all complaining, grumpy, and needing her at the same time. At last, she walked behind the nursing station counter and started filing all the patients’ records she’d been checking over the past couple of hours. The chance to sit down for even a little bit was a blessing. She raised her head as a couple of nurses walked past. They looked in her direction and started laughing behind their hands.
What’s wrong with them?
She lowered her head back to what she was doing and let her mind run wild with thoughts of Trent. It eased away the tedium of filing, but she didn’t mind. It was just part of the job. She’d always enjoyed helping people, and if some paperwork came with the territory, so be it.
That look on his face when they had hit that breakthrough had been beautiful. With all that tension hanging over them, breaking it all at once had felt so good. It was like a thunderstorm that ended a full day of humidity. If a person didn’t go through that muggy day, the lack of it wouldn’t be nearly so sweet. And besides, who didn’t like a good thunderstorm?
She finished the filing and peered up at the clock. It was almost her break time. One last check of the patients on the way to the elevator and she’d be hitting the canteen, somewhere between “hungry” and “half-starved.” She started at the far end of the hallway and worked her way back past the nursing station. A minute or two in each room was enough to see the patients were resting and felt they were receiving the attention they deserved.
When she left Mrs. Jacobson’s room, she heard muttering. It was the two nurses from earlier. Somehow, Tiffany knew they were talking about her. She had no way of knowing for sure, but the way her skin tingled told her. Could call it women’s intuition.
“Hey,” Tiffany said as she stepped around the corner. As expected, the two snapped their heads up and looked as guilty as her little cousin did whenever he’d snuck cookies out of the jar.
“Hi,” one of them said.
“I’m going out on a limb here,” Tiffany said, “but are you two talking about me?”
The two fidgeted some more. “Sorry. It’s just…you know how it is. Things get so dull that any bit of rumor makes the rounds.”
“What kind of rumor?”
“Just about you and…professional standards.”
“That I’m not following?” Tiffany scanned through the past week, thinking if she missed any of her duties. Nothing came to mind. She usually was good at checking and double checking everything she did with a patient, and she couldn’t think of any who would complain.
Just then, her name boomed from the intercom. The thing was way too loud. She was being called to the hospital director’s office. Glancing back at the two one last time, she instantly regretted it. The look on their faces said it all.
